This Fall, D4SD will be hosting a series of collaborative design workshops aimed at exploring challenges and generating potential solutions for the housing crisis. Everyone who submits a design proposal by Oct 25 will be invited to showcase their ideas at the World Design Policy Conference on November 12, 2024. Connect with civic leaders and housing experts, get traction on your proposal, and win recognition and awards!
SIGNATURE EVENT
World Design Policy Conference
November 12–13, 2024
D4SD 2024 culminates with the World Design Policy Conference on November 12th. Teams have the opportunity to present their proposal to civic leaders, professionals, and experts in the housing space to propel their ideas forward, gain feedback, and take steps towards real change with their solution.
At least one ticket per team will be provided with each valid submission (more may become available). Additional tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate and will be available on the World Design Policy Conference registration page, announced at a later date. Attendance is not required at this event to participate but at least one member must be present to be eligible for recognition, awards, and cash prizes.
UPCOMING EVENTS
If you are planning to participate in D4SD this year, attend an event to learn more about the housing topic, to find teammates, and to get inspiration for your design solution. These are not required in order to enter the challenge.
Design Lab Workshop #1: Discover + Define (in collaboration with ACM)
October 9, 2024 – 4-6pm
The Design Lab at UC San Diego will be hosting a series of interactive design workshops to prepare teams for the 2024 D4SD Challenge. The first workshop is on October 9 at 4-6pm and will focus on problem discovery, empathy building, problem framing, and conducting research. This will be a hybrid event (on zoom and at the Design and Innovation Building, Room 208 at the UC San Diego campus). Please register to attend.
Design Lab Workshop #2: Develop + Deliver (in collaboration with Architecture@UCSD)
October 16, 2024 – 4-6pm
The Design Lab at UC San Diego will host a second interactive design workshop to help teams prepare teams for the 2024 D4SD Challenge. The second workshop is on October 16 at 4-6pm and will focus on ideating, prototyping, and pitching ideas. This will be a hybrid event (on Zoom and at the Design and Innovation Building, Room 208 at the UC San Diego campus). Please register to attend.
D4SD Final Showcase
November 12, 2024
As detailed above, D4SD 2024 will culminate with a final showcase, judging, and interactive workshop as part of the World Design Policy Conference on Nov. 12. All teams with a valid submission will get one ticket for this event.

Living-Centered Design (with Cannon Design)
September 23, 2024 – 5-8pm
On Sept 23 at 5-8pm, the Design Lab at UC San Diego partnered with Cannon Design to host a living-centered design workshop aimed at sharing insights and developing points of view around different health-related challenges for the homeless and unhoused population.
Universidad Xochicalco Design Workshop

On Sept 12 at 7-8:30pm, the D4SD team hosted an introductory virtual workshop with Universidad Xochicalco’s Department of Architecture in Tijuana, Mexico.
